Stephen Hillenburg is the creator of the fifth longest-running U.S. animated series, “SpongeBob Squarepants,” he is also an accomplished writer, producer, and marine biologist. It is rumored that his profession inspired the concept of Spongebob while working at the Ocean Institute in California, which is now a multi-billion dollar franchise.
His friends and colleagues from the Nickelodeon series honored him in 2021 with a SpongeBob Squarepants memorial bench at Alma Mater High School, where he graduated in 1979. Hillenburg’s wife, Karen was adamant that the bench had to be yellow to fully embody his love for the show and its achievements.
